Shadow Games: Chapter 1

6 months later
Las Vegas, Nevada
4:00 a.m.

Sam, Dean, and Essence drove into town and stopped at the closest hotel. They checked in, eager to get to sleep after a long hunt. They got their room key, headed toward the elevator, and began looking for their room. After half an hour of searching the hallways, they finally found their room, unlocking the door and instantly falling asleep when they laid down.
Through out the night, Essence began to toss and turn in her bed.
"Miss me?" a distorted, distant voice asked.
Essence sat up and looked around. Dean was asleep in the other bed, snoring loudly with his mouth hanging open. Sam slept silently and uncomfortably on the too small couch, his legs hanging off the end of the arm rest.
"Behind the mirror, in the back room, there's a door," an image of a room in a casino entered Essence's mind. "Go in and I'll tell you where to go from there," the distant voice grew fainter.
That voice sounds so familiar, Essence thought. She tried to remember who's it was but was too tired. Her eyes grew heavier and soon she drifted back into sleep.

Sam and Dean woke up early the next morning. After getting ready for the day they noticed that Essence was surprisingly still asleep, which was unusual because she usually woke up before them. Dean slipped out of the room silently while Sam searched for a case on his laptop. Something caught his eye on a national news website.

     Grave Robberies Continue
Over the last few months, a series of unusual thefts have been taking place across the country. Just last week, the body Marlene Sullivan, who died at the age of 15 on December 28 of unknown causes, was stolen from her grave in a small Massachusetts town. This is the thirteenth body that has been stolen in the past five months, all of which died on the same day last year. There appears to be no other obvious connections between the deceased. Investigators believe these thefts were committed by a cult of local teenagers.....

Sam didn't bother reading what the police thought about what was going on. He knew that they were more than likely wrong. He bookmarked the page to show to Dean when he got back.
A couple hours later, Essence shifted a bit before deciding to get up. She looked over and saw Sam on his laptop. Looking around, she noticed that Dean wasn't there.
"Where's Dean?" Essence asked while stretching.
Sam looked over at Essence. "He went to get something to eat."
     "What time is it?"
Sam looked at the clock in the corner of his laptop screen. "Two thirty," he said.
Essence's eyes grew wide. "Are you serious?!" she yelped. "How did I sleep that long?!"
Dean walked into the room holding a large bag of poker chips. He had a grin on his face as he put the bag down.
     "Where's the food?" Sam asked.
Dean looked at Sam confused. "What food?"
"The food you went to get four hours ago!"
Dean thought for a few seconds. "... Oh!" He dug through the bag of poker chips until he found half of a flattened Subway sandwich. "Here ya go."
He threw the flattened sandwich to Sam, who had a look of disbelief on his face. Sam sighed and unwrapped it.
"Wait!" Dean grabbed the sandwich out of Sam's hands, took a bite, and gave it back. "Okay."
     "Really?!" Sam said.
Essence got out of bed, took the remainder of the sandwich, and went back to her bed. Sam closed his hand around the space where his food was and frowned.
"Sorry, but I'm starving," Essence said, then took a huge bite out of the sandwich.
"I'm hungry, too," Sam said quietly. After a few seconds of thought, he sighed, knowing there was no point trying to argue. He remembered the page he'd bookmarked and opened it to show Dean and Essence. "I think you two should read this," he said, turning the laptop around for them.
Essence and Dean went to the table and leaned in to read. After a minute or two they both looked up with a mixture of expressions on their faces.
Essence's face turned red and she got up and started packing. Sam and Dean exchanged concerned glances and silently agreed to start packing. When they were sure they had everything, they headed downstairs to check out. As they reached the front desk, a series of paramedics ran past them, pushing past them, pushing gurneys. Sam, Dean, and Essence followed them. In the back of the casino, a crowd had formed around a small room. The paramedics loaded three people onto the gurneys. Coroners loaded seven headless bodies onto their own gurneys.
After a few minutes of thought, Essence gasped as she remembered her dream and recognized the scene.
     "We have to stay."
