Shadow Games: Prologue

January 2, 2010
Massachusetts

A cold wind blew through the nearly deserted cemetery, making the hairs on Essence's arms and neck stand up. Her long, dark brown hair blew into her face, which she was grateful for because she didn't want Sam and Dean to see her. She watched the cheap casket lower into the small grave and sighed.
"So.... I guess we should go now," she said, keeping her voice calm.
Sam and Dean exchanged concerned looks.
"Are you sure you want to go already?" Sam asked her.
She hesitated, staring into the hole. "Yeah, I'm sure."
Dean put an arm around her to try and comfort her and the three of them turned to leave. Essence looked back at the grave and Sam and Dean got into the Impala. Essence opened her door and stopped. She grabbed something out of the backseat and ran back to the grave. She left it on the cement slate that marked the grave and got into the car. As they pulled away from the cemetery she took one last look and let out a silent sob. Fortunately for her, Sam and Dean didn't notice.
On the grave lay a fake black rose with a slip of paper wrapped around the stem. The grave marker shined dully and read:
